San Juan Reopens to Royal Caribbean’s Biggest Ships After More Than a Year of Delays
Published Sunday, June 29th 2025 - Updated Monday, June 30th 2025Cruise fans have something big to celebrate—literally. After more than a year of cancellations and uncertainty, one of the Caribbean’s most beloved ports is once again ready to welcome the largest cruise ships in the world. San Juan, Puerto Rico’s Pier 3 West has officially reopened, clearing the way for Royal Caribbean’s massive Oasis and Icon Class ships to return.
The Problem That Stalled the Caribbean’s Cruise Comeback
The trouble began in April 2024, when an MSC Cruises ship accidentally struck and damaged a dolphin mooring structure at San Juan Cruise Port. That specific part of the pier—essential for securing mega cruise ships—was the only berth in San Juan capable of accommodating Royal Caribbean’s largest vessels.
In response, the U.S. Coast Guard shut down Pier 3 West pending structural repairs, safety assessments, and a full inspection. Though smaller ships could still dock at San Juan’s other berths, any Oasis or Icon Class sailings had to be rerouted—much to the disappointment of cruisers. Some passengers had booked their trips specifically to experience the vibrant culture and rich history of San Juan, and were understandably frustrated when the port was removed from their itinerary. Even other cruise lines were impacted, including Disney Cruise Line’s newest ship, Disney Treasure, which had to bypass San Juan due to the pier’s limitations.
A Long-Awaited Milestone: Pier 3 West is Back
On June 27, San Juan Cruise Port finally announced the good news: Pier 3 West is fully restored and cleared for operation.
“Good news for San Juan and the entire cruise industry! Pier 3 West has been officially restored, after completing a rigorous structural assessment in accordance with U.S. Coast Guard requirements,” the port shared in a Facebook post.
Clarivette Diaz, general manager of the port, emphasized that while the process was lengthy, it was essential for ensuring passenger and ship safety.
“It has been a long road, but our priority has always been to meet all the requirements established by the regulatory agencies and ensure the safe arrival of cruise ships in the coming years,” Diaz said.
Cruisers Celebrate the Return of San Juan
The reaction from the cruising community has been overwhelmingly positive. Many passengers are thrilled that their long-awaited visits to Puerto Rico are finally back on the schedule.
“We chose our upcoming cruise specifically to be able to visit Puerto Rico and I’m so excited we will now be able to port here!” wrote one cruiser on Facebook.
While Royal Caribbean has not yet formally confirmed updates to its itineraries, signs point to a quick return. Previously canceled stops for Icon of the Seas and Wonder of the Seas—including visits originally set for May through July—could now resume starting with the August 6 and August 12 calls, respectively.
What This Means for the Caribbean Cruise Season
The reopening of Pier 3 West comes at a crucial time, as Royal Caribbean and other major cruise lines ramp up operations for the busy fall and winter seasons. San Juan’s unique combination of historic charm, world-class cuisine, and tropical beauty makes it a highlight on many Eastern Caribbean itineraries. With this major infrastructure issue now resolved, San Juan is once again poised to be a premier port of call—and Royal Caribbean’s largest ships are ready to return.
Stay tuned for official updates from Royal Caribbean as schedules are confirmed. For now, it’s safe to say: San Juan is back on the map in a big way.
