How To Pick Your First Cruise Vacation

So, you’re thinking about taking your very first cruise? Great choice! But here’s the deal—picking that first cruise can feel a little like standing in front of a buffet with way too many options. Do you grab the shrimp cocktail, the prime rib, or the chocolate fountain first? (Answer: all of them. Always all of them.)
The same goes for cruises. There are a few big things to think about:
The Ship
Some people care most about the ship itself. Do you want a floating city with waterslides, bumper cars, and Broadway shows? Or something smaller and chill, where the bartender knows your name by day two?
The Itinerary
Others are all about where the ship goes. Caribbean beaches? Alaskan glaciers? Maybe sipping espresso in Italy? Your first cruise is a chance to check off that dream destination.
The Port
Don’t forget about the embarkation port. Do you want to drive to the pier, or are you okay flying in? Sometimes the closest port makes the decision easy.
The Cruise Line
Each line has its own “personality.” Some are kid-friendly, some are more adult-focused, and some are all about food, fun, or adventure. Matching the vibe to your style is key.
The Price
And yes, price matters. Cruise fares can be super affordable, but they vary depending on ship, itinerary, cabin type, and time of year.
Here’s the Trick. Pick what’s most important to you—ship, itinerary, port, cruise line, or price. Then, build around that. Don’t stress about finding “the perfect cruise.” Spoiler alert: whichever one you pick, you’re going to have a blast.
Oh, and here’s my best advice: find a travel agent who knows cruises. A good one will help you sort through the options, score you the best deal, and make sure your first cruise is smooth sailing.
Lucky for you, you’ve already found one—Mike The Cruise Guy. That’s me. I’ll help you get on the right ship, to the right place, for the right price… and maybe even throw in a few insider tips that you won’t find on Google.
